In his first session, he passed 38 bills and secured millions of state dollars to help Texas families. Senator Menendez currently sits on the Senate Committees of Higher Education, Criminal Justice, and Intergovernmental Relations.

Under his leadership, $8.9 million was appropriated to Alamo Colleges to build and develop Veterans support centers including right here at San Antonio College. Senator Menéndez also helped secure $32 million for the Alamo; $11 million for Texas A&M San Antonio to expand into a 4 year campus; and $3 million for San Antonio parks.

He passed meaningful legislation to help San Antonio seniors including a bill that requires all public Senior housing be retrofitted with fire safety sprinklers. Senator Menéndez also passed two bills that improve access to Veterans mental healthcare. Senate Bill 1304 would create a women's specific mental healthcare program. Senate Bill 1305 would create a rural mental health program for Veterans.

Prior to being elected a State Senator, he served as a Representative for House District 124. He was elected to the Texas House in 2000, and during his tenure, he was entrusted with an appointment to the powerful Appropriations Committee, where he secured millions of dollars for Haven for Hope, Morgan’s Wonderland, and other crucial San Antonio initiatives. In his final session as State Representative, he was appointed Chairman of the House Committee on Defense and Veterans’ Affairs, where he passed one of the state’s largest mental health programs for Veterans.

The son of immigrants, State Senator José Menéndez grew up working at his family’s small business in San Antonio. He graduated from Central Catholic High School before earning degrees in Business Administration and Latin American Studies at Southern Methodist University. As a family man, Senator Menéndez has been married to his best friend Cehlia Newman-Menéndez since 1995. In his spare time, José enjoys spending time with his three children, Dominic, Victoria, and Austin. He feels so blessed to have such a wonderful family.
