Both Dallas County and the City of Dallas operated dumps on the north and south sides of Commerce St., just west of the Commerce St. viaduct during the 1920s. The City of Irving also operated a dump in West Dallas.
When filled, dumps in West Dallas were graded flat and built over. As with the chemical refineries and metal and boiler plants, the aggregated by- products from salvage yards and land- fills remain unknown and it can be as- sumed that their operations also made them point sources for local contamin- ation.
