Nichols named vice chair of Sunset

Today, Sen. Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) was named vice chair of the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission.

"I'd like to thank Lt. Gov. Dewhurst for this opportunity to continue to find ways to make Texas government more accountable and effective," said Nichols. "The sunset process helps guarantee Texas government serves the people and not the other way around."

The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission makes recommendations whether an agency should continue or not, and suggests ways to improve agency functions if it is continued.

Since 1977, when Sunset began in Texas, 37 agencies have been completely abolished and 41 were abolished with some functions transferred to other agencies. Sunset reforms from the last legislative session are estimated to have saved taxpayers $161 million.

Beginning in January, the Sunset Commission will review and make recommendations for 24 agencies. These include the Texas Education Agency, Ethics Commission, the Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the Board of Pardons and Paroles.

First appointed to the Sunset Commission in 2009, Nichols looks forward to serving in his role as vice chair.

"As an elected official I look forward to increasing the efficiency of our state agencies and reducing government whenever possible," said Nichols.
