Senator César J. Blanco Responds to Proposed Congressional Map

Austin, Texas — Today, State Senator César J. Blanco issued the following statement in response to the release of the proposed congressional redistricting map, which would move a critical asset based in El Paso to a San Antonio-based district.

“Parts of the proposed map reflect El Paso’s growth and maintain strong representation in CD-16. However, carving out Fort Bliss, the airport, and the future VA Medical Center risks weakening our ability to speak with one voice on critical federal issues. These are strategic assets that fuel our economy, support our military families, and are deeply connected to our identity as a community.

During Tuesday’s Senate Redistricting Committee hearing, Senator Blanco questioned El Paso City Representative Deanna Maldonado-Rocha about the importance of keeping critical assets, like our airport and Fort Bliss, in an El Paso-based congressional district. Watch the exchange with Rep. Maldonado-Rocha here.

Senator Blanco emphasized that El Pasoans share a deeply interconnected identity, shaped by shared geography, culture, economy, and community values.

“We are a proud border community, a military community, and a working-class community. Our interests are strongest when we’re united. This map impacts real people and the ability of our region to get things done in Washington.”

Senator Blanco has consistently advocated for keeping El Paso whole and is urging the public to stay engaged in the redistricting process. He encourages residents to participate in the upcoming House Redistricting Committee hearing on August 1st.
