Press Items: Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa — District 20

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 16, 2026
Austin, TX – Today, the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) approved a $4 million grant for Nueces County Drainage District No. 2 to support flood control improvements in Robstown and surrounding areas. The project will specifically target the frequent flooding occurring in the Casa Blanca and Bluebonnet subdivisions, areas in the vicinity of Bosquez Road and Avenue J, and Robstown High School. The flooding is caused by inadequate drainage canal capacity, flat topography, and water-flow constrictions from roads and railways.
The proposed improvements include widening drainage ditches, installing underground and surface storm drains, upgrading culverts and detention facilities, and acquiring land needed for drainage easements. The grant will also go towards the district’s three existing Flood Infrastructure Fund projects, which are all currently in the design phase.
This grant is part of a statewide directive in Senate Bill 1 requiring TWDB to use $581 million from the General Revenue Fund appropriated in House Bill 500 to provide funding for 34 infrastructure, flood, wastewater, and water-supply projects across Texas. House Bill 500, which passed last year during the 89th Regular Session, was co-sponsored by Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa.
Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa expressed his support for this funding, stating: “This $4 million grant is an important investment in protecting families, neighborhoods, and schools in western Nueces County from repeated flooding. Investments in flood protection infrastructure are essential to public safety, protecting property, and improving quality of life.”
