Nichols Presents Proclamation to Local Veteran

Jacksonville, TX - This week, Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) presented a Texas Senate Proclamation to Mr. Melton Edward Durant as tribute to his service to our nation and the exceptional life he has led.

"I was honored to present this proclamation to Mr. Durant," said Senator Nichols. "He has not only served his country, but he also gives back to his local community through his patriotism and enthusiasm for life."

Mr. Durant who is from Jacksonville, joined the United States Army three months after his 18th birthday in June of 1944. Known as "Tex" to his fellow servicemen, Mr. Durant was a member of Company I of the 275th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division. He fought with distinction in the final three major battles of the European Theater of World War II, and was just outside of Frankfurt when Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945. There were 102 original members of Company 1, however only 12 survived to return home. Mr. Durant was later awarded the Bronze Star for his service and sacrifice.
