Nichols requests applications for Texas Armed Services Scholarship

Austin — Today, state Sen. Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) called on qualified students to apply for a Texas Armed Services Scholarship.

"This scholarship is a way to encourage and reward students interested in military service," said Nichols. "It provides a unique opportunity for students to pursue higher education and take advantage of preparation from college ROTC programs."

The scholarship is offered by the state and rewards students who commit to four years of ROTC training and military service after graduation. Each state senator and representative may select a student to receive a scholarship up to $10,000.

Applications must be received by Nichols' Capitol office by March 5, 2010.

Qualified students must:

  1. plan to enter a public or private college or university as a freshman for the 2010-2011 academic year.
  2. reside in Senate District 3
  3. must meet two of the following four academic requirements:

    • have a current high school GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
    • achieve a college readiness score of on the SAT (1590) or ACT (23)
    • be ranked in the top one-third of the prospective high school graduating class

The scholarship requires students to:

  • make a four-year commitment to service in the Texas Army or Air Force National Guard, or serve as a commissioned officer in any brand of the U.S. Armed Forces

Scholarship recipients who fail to complete the required criteria will have to repay the scholarship amount.

To apply for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship, students should submit a one or two-page essay explaining why they believe military service is important and how they would fulfill the requirements of the scholarship.

Students should also include their personal contact information and the contact information for one reference. Students may be contacted for a follow-up interview if needed and may be asked to provide documentation of qualifications.

Applications should be mailed to:
