SENATOR NELSON ISSUES STATEMENT ON EMERGENCY ACTIONS TO ADDRESS BORDER CRISIS

AUSTIN — Today Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, joined state leaders at a news conference to announce emergency actions to address the ongoing crisis at the southern border.

"For months we have been pleading with the federal government to step up and do its job at our southern border. They aren't listening. In fact, they are making the situation worse by the day. Texas cannot wait any longer. We have to restore order and security," Senator Nelson said. "I have seen the effects of an unsecured border firsthand, and this Administration's policies are not compassionate. They are hurting people on both sides of the border."

Alongside Governor Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Dade Phelan and Rep. Greg Bonnen, Senator Nelson signed a letter directing $250 million in emergency funding to begin constructing physical barriers on state land or on private land voluntarily provided for this purpose. The goal is to reduce the number of crossing routes, diverting individuals to certain areas so that law enforcement can concentrate state resources more effectively. These funds are on top of $1.1 billion already approved by the 87th Legislature, including newly authorized funding to enhance Operation Lone Star with 700 guardsmen on mission, an additional 100 Department of Public Safety troopers, new equipment and vehicles, and salary increases for DPS officers.

On May 31, 2021, the Governor issued a proclamation declaring the situation on the state’s southern border a disaster. Senator Nelson traveled to the southern border with five other senators on March 22 — the day after troopers rescued a mother and child after their raft capsized, killing her other child. SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the highest-ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
