Senator Creighton Statement on New 60 Percent Rule

AUSTIN — In response to today's passage of the Texas Senate's new 60 percent rule, Senator Brandon Creighton (R-Conroe) issued the following statement:

"By altering the two-thirds rule to 60 percent, we are increasing transparency for the state of Texas," said Senator Creighton. "This change will put good conservative legislation at the forefront of the 84th legislative session and allow our constituents across the state an opportunity to hold us accountable for our voting record. I'm not afraid of that."

For over half a century, the two-thirds rule has been a custom in the Texas Senate requiring two-thirds of the 31 senators to approve any bill before bringing it to the floor for debate outside of calendar order.

SENATOR BRANDON CREIGHTON represents District 4, which encompasses parts of Montgomery, Harris, Chambers, Jefferson and Galveston Counties. He currently serves on the Senate Committee on Open Government, the Senate Committee on State Affairs, and the Joint Interim Committee on Judicial Selection.
