STATE AUTHORIZES FUNDS TO HELP LOCAL COMMUNITIES WITH HARVEY RELIEF

AUSTIN — Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, today announced the approval of emergency funding to help areas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“Harvey caused catastrophic damage to the Gulf Coast, and through this budget decision we are lending our support to help local communities with recovery and relief," Senator Nelson said. "All Texas leaders — local, state and federal — need to work hand in hand to ensure that Texas rebuilds and comes out stronger."

The Legislative Budget Board (LBB) has approved $90 million to help local governments cover the cost of debris removal in counties that are in a state of emergency. Emergency management officials estimate that as much as 30 million cubic yards of debris, reaching costs estimated to be as high as $960 million in total, accumulated from the storm.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency covers 90 percent of these costs, with local governments responsible for a 10 percent match. Under today’s LBB decision, the state will cover the local match, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will work with the Texas Department of Emergency Management to deliver these funds.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the highest-ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
