SENATE APPROVES TEACHER BONUS, BENEFIT INCREASE

AUSTIN – The Texas Senate has approved SB 19 by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, providing additional compensation and benefits for Texas teachers. The bill, which passed by a 28-3 vote, next moves to the Texas House of Representatives for further consideration.

“Teachers are the backbone of our educational system and should be at the forefront of our school finance discussions,” Senator Nelson, a former sixth-grade teacher, said. “I understand first-hand the impact teachers have, not only on the children they teach, but on our society as a whole. We must pass Senate Bill 19 to reward our teachers for their invaluable service to our state.”

SB 19 provides bonuses and bolsters the Teacher Retirement System, including:

  • a $600 bonus to teachers who have served 6 to 10 years;
  • a $1,000 bonus for teachers who have served 11 or more years;
  • a $212M appropriation to TRS to reduce costs for TRS participants for items such as premiums, deductibles, prescription drugs, and to assist with premiums and out of pocket costs for disabled adult dependents of retired teachers. Specifically, it directs TRS to:
    • Reduce max out-of-pocket costs for retirees with adult disabled children and premiums for these retirees by $200;
    • Reduce deductibles for non-Medicare retirees by half, from $3000 to $1500; and
    • Reduce Medicare retiree premiums by $25.
SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the highest-ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
